Component waterproofing
We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard).
The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric.
Components with a 2000 mm rating can withstand the pressure of a 2000 mm column of water (which is equivalent to a rain shower lasting 2 hours).
Waterproofing of the garment
This garment has been shower-tested in 60 liters/sqm/hour of water for 2 hours. This test reproduces the average conditions of a rain shower in the mountains.
Breathability of the garment
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we test its evaporative resistance or RET (based on the ISO 11092 standard).
The lower the resistance, the more water vapor generated by the body in physical activity can escape through the fabric. Hence, the more breathable it is.
For example:
RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric
12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric
RET > 20 = little or no breathability.
This cape has an RET = 8
Water-repellent property of the component
The water-repellent property of a fabric is its ability to make water run off its surface without absorbing it.
In this way, the fabric does not soak up water and therefore remains lightweight, breathable and warm.
The water-repellent property is obtained by applying a treatment to the outer surface of the fabric.
This treatment needs to be restored throughout the lifetime of the garment (every 3 washes).
All of Quechua’s ponchos and capes have a water-repellent treatment.
Component breathability
To find out if a fabric is breathable, we measure its evaporative resistance RET (test based on ISO 11092). The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more water vapor, generated by physical activity, is able to evaporate and the higher the fabric’s breathability. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric / 920 = little or no breathability.
Garment breathability
In addition to breathable fabrics, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, ventilation, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of all its walking jackets, overpants and rain capes (Forclaz, Bionnassay and Helium lines).
These ventilation systems help regulate the temperature inside the garment and also facilitate the transfer of perspiration generated by the body during physical exertion.
Water-repellent property of the component
A fabric is water-repellent when it allows water to slide over its surface without seeping in. This prevents the fabric from becoming waterlogged, and keeps it lightweight, breathable and warm. A fabric is made water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment’s lifetime (recommended after every 3 washes). All Quechua waterproof jackets have received a water-repellent treatment.
Breathability of the garment
In addition to breathable fabrics, Quechua develops technical solutions (zips, ventilation, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its trekking jackets, overpants and rain capes (Forclaz, Bionassay and Helium lines).
These ventilation systems allow to both regulate the temperature inside of the garment and help wick away perspiration generated by the body during exercise.
Water repellent component
The water resistance of a fabric is its ability to let water slide on its surface without absorbing it. This prevents the fabric from swelling, and keeps it lightweight, breathable and warm. The water resistance is obtained by a treatment applied to the outside of the fabric. This treatment needs to be repeated throughout the product’s lifespan (we recommend every 3 washes). All Quechua waterproof ponchos and capes have received a water repellent treatment.
A note to compare the environmental impact of the products
The environmental impacts of the product are calculated throughout its life-cycle and with different indicators. An ABCDE note is performed to help you easily identify the products with the best environmental performance by comparing the products of the same type between them (T-shirts, pants, backpacks…).
Decathlon is a voluntary player of this approach of environmental labeling.
