Thermal comfort and windproof
Wind considerably increases the effect of the cold! With an outside temperature of 32°F and 12 mph winds, it will feel like the temperature is 14°F. “Windproof” components help eliminate the discomfort linked to this “freezing effect”. They are very effective at reducing heat loss by creating a barrier against the wind.
Water-repellent component (different to being waterproof)
A fabric’s water-repellent property is what makes water run off its surface without absorbing it. This prevents the fabric from becoming saturated with water and keeps it lightweight, breathable and warm. A fabric is made water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment must be renewed throughout the garment’s lifetime (recommended after every 3 washes).
Component breathability
To find out if a fabric is breathable, its total evaporation resistance RET (test based on ISO 11092), is measured. The lower the resistance, the more the fabric lets water vapor generated by body movements escape, therefore the more breathable it is. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric / 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric / 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric / RET > 20 = little or no breathability.
Breathability of the garment
In addition to breathability of the fabrics used, Quechua develops technical solutions (zippers, ventilation, mesh, etc.) to improve the overall ventilation of its backpacking jackets and overpants designed for great hiking use (Forclaz, Bionnassay and Helium lines). These ventilation systems can be used to regulate the temperature inside the garment as well as eliminate the perspiration generated by the body during physical activity.
