What did we do to reduce the environmental impact with our blue Raincut Long jacket?
We take care of our planet to preserve nature and help preserve the pleasure of hiking. Textile dyeing requires a lot of water but also produces waste water from the dye baths. To reduce this environmental impact, we chose to use a bulk-dyeing process that incorporates the color pigments from the yarn manufacturing phase onward.
This is how we dyed the fabric of our blue Raincut Long jacket.
What have we done to reduce the environmental impact of our Raincut Long jacket in Khaki
By recycling plastic bottles to produce our polyester, we have reduced the utilization of oil-based resources while preserving the quality and performance of the material during your activities.
The fabric on the Raincut Long jacket in khaki is in recycled polyester.
Determining the environmental impact of our products
On a scale from A to E, this jacket scored a C.
Our products’ environmental impacts are calculated over their entire lifecycle. A score is attributed to each product so that you can easily identify the most eco-friendly products within a particular family.
Decathlon is a voluntary supporter of this environmentally-friendly labeling approach.
Waterproofing of the garment
The garment passed a shower test under 60 liters of water/m²/hour for 1 hour. This test reproduces the average conditions of a rain shower. The fabric of this jacket is water-repellent, i.e. water runs off its surface without being absorbed. This prevents the fabric from soaking up water and keeps it lightweight and breathable. The water-repellent property is achieved by treating the fabric’s exterior. In addition, we taped the main seams that are most exposed to the rain.
A jacket, with 2 ways to wear it
If you want to tighten the jacket at the waist, use the belt and buckle: slide the 2 parts of the buckle horizontally to clip it; do the same to detach it.
Or make the decision to take off the removable belt and wear your jacket loose without tightening it at the waist!
How to maintain the waterproof property of your jacket over time
To maintain good waterproofing over time, the fabric’s water-repellent properties must be restored regularly. We recommend doing this every 3 washes or after a dozen uses in the rain. The water-repellent property is easily reactivated by warming the fabric: either in your tumble dryer or with a hairdryer, for example, over a relatively short period. If you are washing it, it must be thoroughly rinsed.
Waterproof rating expressed in mm or Schmerbers
We measure a fabric’s resistance to water pressure, expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the water pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm can therefore withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm water column.
Component breathability
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we test its total evaporative resistance (RET) based on the ISO 11092 standard. The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more water vapor generated by physical activity can escape, and the higher the fabric’s breathability.
– RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric
– 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric
– 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric
– RET > 20 = little or no breathability
How to choose your waterproof jacket based on your outings and level of exertion
During sports activity, the extent to which we perspire depends on the intensity or duration of the physical effort. If the breathability of the fabric is not adapted to your type of physical activity, the perspiration vapor condenses inside the jacket. You will feel damp inside: this is not rain coming through, but perspiration condensing. You need to choose a rain jacket according to your physical activity level. This jacket is designed for 2 h hiking at a max. speed of 3 mph.
