all-weather hiking enthusiasts who need proper protection.
Component waterproofing
A fabric’s resistance is measured using water pressure expressed in terms of the height of a water column in mm (test based on ISO 811) The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a waterproof rating of 5,000 mm is therefore able to withstand the pressure exerted by 5,000 mm of water (the rough equivalent of a 5-hour rain shower.) The waterproof rating is expressed in Schmerbers (for example: 5,000 Schmerbers).
Component breathability
To find out whether a fabric is breathable, we test its evaporative resistance or RET (based on the ISO 11092 standard). The lower the fabric’s resistance, the more water vapor generated by physical activity can escape and the higher the fabric’s breathability. For example: RET < 9 = extremely breathable fabric / 9 < RET < 12 = very breathable fabric / 12 < RET < 20 = breathable fabric / RET > 20 = little or no breathability.
Component durability
Resistance to wear test: for example, we carry out laboratory tests to check that the fleeces do not pill. Colorfastness test: we check colorfastness to ensure that colors do not bleed when coming into contact with saliva. Aging test: repeated washing must not alter the fabric’s original properties, including its shape, thickness or appearance.
Windproof effect
The fabric is rendered waterproof, and therefore wind proof, by applying a coating to the inner surface. In fact, the properties of a waterproof fabric mean that it can also be certified as wind proof. It is very important to protect yourself from the wind, when moving or stationary, because of the wind’s powerful chilling effect.
